Jeffrey Riegel is Director of the China Studies Centre. He formerly served as Head of the School 

o Languages and Cultures at the University from January 2007 to January 2015 and is now Emerit

us Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences as well as Louis B. Agassiz Professor Emerit

us of Chinese at the University of California, Berkeley. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship

 (1986), a Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation Senior Scholar Research Grant (1999), and an Australia Research Council "Discove

ry Project" Grant (2010), he is the co-author of Chinese Archaeological Abstracts (UCLA, 1985), The Annals of Lü Buwei(Stanford, 2001), 

and Mozi: A Study and Translation of the Ethical and Political Writings(Berkeley, 2013) and the aut

hor of numerous articles on various aspects of Chinese thought, literature, and archaeology that 

have appeared in the journals Chinese Literature: Essays, Articles, and Reviews, Early China, The H

arvard Journal of Asiatic Studies, The Journal of the American Oriental Society, Asia Major,and the

 Journal of Chinese Studies,as well as the Chinese journals Zhongguo guoxue yanjiu,Chutu wenw

u, and the FudanJournal of the Humanities and Social Sciences. He has participated in several hig

hly acclaimed documentaries on the tomb of China's "First Emperor," the building of the Forbidde

n City in Beijing, the life and thought of Confucius, and the Eastern Han tombs of the kings of Ch

u excavated at Xuzhou in Jiangsu province (for the Historyand Discoverychannels in the US, the B

BC in the UK, and CCTV in China). His current projects include a book-length study of the concept of desire in early Confucian texts and an introduction to a new transl

ation of the cookbook compiled by the eighteenthcentury poet Yuan Mei. Professor Riegel has re

cently been a Visiting Professor at Fudan University in Shanghai, the Chinese University of Hong K

ong, and the Suzhou campus of Renmin University. He divides his time between his main residenc

e in Sydney and homes in Suzhou and Siem Reap.
