The book is a complete history of the calligraphy and seal cutting art of the Republic of China (1912-1949), an excellent work with rich contents, detailed materials, comprehensive discourse and new views. It makes some progress on the basis of inheriting some of Mr. Hu Xiaoshi’s calligraphy thoughts. “Complete” is one of the biggest characteristics of this work which has macroscopic discourse on the development of the calligraphy of the Republic of China, specific description of calligraphical genres, groups and calligraphers, and special researches on calligraphy education, activity patterns, art market, social needs and other related subjects. The calligraphers mentioned in the book are as many as 500 to 600. The book is a real contribution to inheritance and development of Chinese traditional culture, has laid a foundation for the further study of the calligraphy theory of the Republic of China in the future.
