内容简介/Introduction:
Shanhui and Shantang were ancient Chinese charitable institutions in the Ming and Qing Dynasties built using funds raised by local esquires and merchants. These charitable institutions came into being in the late 16th century during China’s Ming Dynasty, and prospered during the Qing Dynasty. Some even continued through to the early Republic of China, and made a significant social and cultural impact. This book studies the causes Shantang supported from social and economic angles, and also investigates its function and character from the benefactors’ perspective. This serves to provide an in-depth understanding of the Ming and Qing Dynasties’ social culture.
