The compiling work of this series of books started from 1956. The result of the first period took 8 years to be finished and published. In 1964, the single-volume The Long  Draft Edition of History of Chinese Ancient Dance was published inside Chinese Dancers’ Association. From then, the first generation of experts of dance history were cultivated by a group of great masters of history who were generous to give lectures, including Shen Congwen, Yin Falu,  Wu Xiaoling, Yang Yinliu and Fu Xihua. The result of the second period took over 20 years to be finished and published. From 1983 to 1987, five Volumes of History of Chinese Dance named by Culture and Art Publishing House were published consecutively. The result of the third period is this series of books which took another 20 years to be finished and published, based on the result of the second period.
